All trims feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, and these models have the less powerful engine. All-wheel drive models have the more powerful engine. Even the base Momentum trim comes well-equipped, and it’ll more than satisfy many buyers. Still, it’s worth stepping up to the R-Design, which adds several comfort and convenience upgrades, as well as more driver assistance features. Volvo XC40 Momentum The XC40 Momentum comes standard with cloth and synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, automatic climate control, and a power liftgate. The standard infotainment system consists of a 9-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, an eight-speaker stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio, three USB ports, and Bluetooth. The XC40 also comes standard with forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and a rearview camera. Volvo XC40 R-Design The XC40 R-Design comes with unique interior and exterior design elements, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, power-folding headrests, a panoramic moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a removable trunk floor, navigation, and wireless device charging. The Volvo has a roomier, more upscale cabin and a longer list of standard features. Both SUVs offer a choice between two small turbocharged engines, but the Jaguar handles better. The Volvo, on the other hand, gets better gas mileage. Compare the XC40 and E-Pace » 2020 Volvo XC40 vs. 2020 BMW X1 The BMW X1 joins the XC40 near the top of our luxury subcompact SUV rankings . Though the X1 only has one engine option, it has plenty of power and accelerates with ease. This luxury SUV has poised handling and a suspension system that does a nice job of blending comfort and athleticism. Both SUVs have attractive interiors and spacious back seats, but the BMW has more cargo room. Compare the XC40 and X1 » Compare the XC40, E-Pace, and X1 » 2020 XC40 Performance How Does the 2020 Volvo XC40 Drive? You can’t go wrong with either of the XC40’s turbocharged engines. It feels punchy in either setup, with spry acceleration off the line and ample passing power on the highway. Each engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that's eager to downshift when you need more power, clicking off routine shifts without missing a beat. The XC40 isn’t the most fun small crossover to drive, but it handles curves with enthusiasm, and the ride quality is mostly good. Small bumps in the road are dispatched with ease, but larger ones – especially at higher speeds – cause the SUV to jostle around a bit. Drivers enjoy good visibility, and both rows of seats provide plenty of headroom, even for taller passengers. The seats are comfortable, but they don’t quite match the standards set by more expensive Volvos, which have some of the most sumptuous seats of any vehicle you can buy. Standard seating features Cloth and synthetic leather upholstery Power-adjustable driver's seat Available seating features Genuine leather upholstery Power-adjustable passenger seat Heated front seats Heated steering wheel How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2020 Volvo XC40? The 2020 XC40 has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use because it may be difficult to maneuver around the lower anchors. 2020 Volvo XC40 Features The XC40 comes with Volvo’s Sensus Connect infotainment system, which works well. It has a vertical 9-inch touch screen that’s more reminiscent of a tablet than the horizontal displays in other cars. Most functions rely entirely on the touch screen, so this system may take some getting used to, especially since there aren’t any physical knobs for things like climate control. Standard infotainment features a 9-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, an eight-speaker stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio, three USB ports, and Bluetooth Available infotainment features navigation, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, and wireless device charging Additional standard features automatic climate control and a digital instrument cluster Other available features a panoramic moonroof and dual-zone automatic climate control See 2020 Volvo XC40 specs » Read more about XC40 interior » 2020 Volvo XC40 Dimensions Volvo XC40 Cargo Space The XC40 offers cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and cubic feet with them folded down. Those figures are subpar for a luxury subcompact SUV , but real-world utility is better than the numbers suggest. The cargo hold is versatile and has several unique features to help you make the most of it. A fold-up cargo floor opens up more space, and hooks for grocery or shopping bags are provided. A trunk divider keeps gear separate. You can also opt for in-cabin storage upgrades like a hidden bin under the driver's seat. The XC40 is Volvo’s smallest SUV and one of the Swedish automaker’s most impressive efforts. Stylish and nimble, the XC40 is offered with front- or all-wheel drive and a choice of two turbocharged engines a 187-horsepower, turbo four-cylinder or a 248-hp, turbo four-cylinder. Both engines work with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Competitors include the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. What’s New on the 2020 Volvo XC40? Fabric upholstery is now standard instead of leather, and the base Momentum trim level gains power child locks, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror and heated windshield wipers. What Features in the 2020 Volvo XC40 Are Most Important? Standard active safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist. Standard convenience features include a 9-inch touchscreen multimedia system, a power liftgate, and power front seats with a driver’s-side memory feature. Should I Buy the 2020 Volvo XC40? The XC40 is an impressive entry in the subcompact luxury SUV class. The T5’s engine is strong, and the SUV handles well. The interior is quiet and offers good storage space. However, rear visibility is limited and the rear-seat cushion is low and not that long. We also wish the multimedia system had more physical controls. Show full review One of my favorites July 12, 2022 By Richard C from Plano, TX Owns this car A great car. It checked most of the boxes that I had when looking for cars at the time. I ponied up for the Polestar software upgrade and wow did that make a difference. A few reviews had said that the car was underpowered. Not any more. There are some great details and some strange ones too, but overall it's one of my favorite vehicles. Like any car these days, there are a few niggling things that Vovo can't seem to fix. The hood doesn't seem to fit correctly no matter what Vovo did. It "bangs" when you lean against it cleaning the windscreen, etc and when the car is jolted potholes, etc. No amount of work seems to properly address the issue. It's years and I've been through a set 2 batteries main and stop/start. It is now giving me the feeling that the main battery is failing again. The stop/start has not worked consistently since I got the car. Vovo tells me I don't drive it enough to keep the battery charged. Well, I do 5 to 6K a year and if that's not enough they should say so up front. Seems to me that there is something up or down with the charging system. Again, I'm impressed. Show full review Super Cool BUT the build quality is poor March 21, 2022 By ST from Boston MA Owns this car My wife owns the Inscription. I drive a 2020 Ram 1500 Limited but with high gas prices been having fun with our X40. I've owned a 2006 XC90 V8 back in the day great SUV extremely well built and SOLID. Also, we've owned a couple of Cross Country wagons in the early 2000s. There is CLEARLY a quality decline with the newer Volvo's. Maybe it's b/c they're owned by China Geely or maybe because people are interested in technology only and quality isnt a priority with most Volvo buyers anymore. The XC40 is a fun car with touch screens, cool LED interior, and exterior lights. It's feature-rich but the build quality is POOR. Most people wouldnt notice the short cuts and cheap material and workmanship but a car person quickly notices Volvo/Geely are not building old school high-quality Volvo's that are built to last anymore. You will see very few of these newer XC40, XC90's with high miles on the road in 15 plus years. I love cruising around in our XC40 Inscription. It's a super cool design and looks like a piece of art. But it only has 15,000 miles and I guaruntee you it wont hit the 200,000 miles like our 2006 XC90.
